RIBA Awards form, arguably, the most rigorously judged awards programme in the world, with every one of the 400 plus entries visited. The RIBA Awards are given for buildings that have high architectural standards and make a substantial contribution to the local environment. The awards are annual and have been running continuously since 1966.

The RIBA Awards for London are given to buildings in the capital that are of a high standard and demonstrate excellence. In terms of entries, it is the largest regional awards process and represents a vast range of projects from across the city in a variety of sectors. The regional awards are the first step in a process that culminates with the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize.

The buildings are judged in the first instance by shortlisting panels in each region that visit schemes individually and meet to produce a list of buildings to be visited by each region's jury. Each regional jury is made up of a regional architect representative, a lay assessor from various disciplines and the jury chair, who is a nationally renowned architect. They visit the shortlisted projects, talk to clients and users and assess design excellence, irrespective of style, size or complexity of the project.

The schemes selected for RIBA Awards are then viewed by the independent RIBA Awards Committee (made up of nationally acclaimed architects) to ensure that the standards of the awards are consistent throughout the nations and regions.

The RIBA London region receives the highest number of awards entries in the UK, with 127 entries in 2010. The London region has four sub-regional juries that cover north, south, east and west London. The 2010 jury included Jury Chairs: Richard Lavington, Alex de Rijke, Graham Haworth and Julia Barfield; Lay Assessors Sarah Ichioka, Crispin Kelly, Lucy Bullivant and Gillian Darley; Regional Representatives David Mikhail, Amin Taha, Dominic Papa and Luke Tozer.

The RIBA Awards Shortlisters for London: Andy Summers, Marcus Lee, Pedro Gil, George Stowell, David Nossiter, Ben Addy, Gus Alexander, Stephen Davy, Matthew Lloyd, Claire MacDonald, Nick Hayhurst, Wendy Ebringer, Tim Jeffery, Elizabeth Barroll, Andrew Macintosh, Kate Scholes, Richard Pain, mojgan Green, Wayne Hincks, Wayne Head, Peregrine Bryant, Tony Michael, Justin Nicholls and Andrew Pilkington.

During the past year David Young has been working on developing a commercial trading operation for the School, letting out facilities to outside parties for gain. This operation has now grown sufficiently that the time has come to formalise this activity and the School's new trading subsidiary, Alleyn's School Enterprises Limited (ASEL), has now been launched with a splendid brochure setting out the services that the School can offer.

Our School is blessed with wonderful buildings and resources, ranging from the award-winning Edward Alleyn Building with its purpose-built conference suite and outstanding Michael Croft Theatre, to the superb sports grounds at Townley Road and Burbage Road. Our catering operation, run by Holroyd Howe, has a justifiably excellent reputation for providing a highly professional catering and entertainment service for our School community. Outside of London, Alleyn's has its well equipped field centre in the beautiful Peak District, suitable for a whole range of group activities. ASEL will hire out these sports, performance and dining facilities and the accommodation at Buxton to external groups and individuals, generally outside of School hours and predominantly during the School holidays, at weekends and in the evenings.

Notwithstanding the introduction of this trading operation the School will continue to offer its facilities to community groups and, of course, will ensure that our pupils' access to and experience of the School's amenities and that of Club members to the Burbage Road site, is not hindered or compromised.

David welcomes enquiries from former pupils and friends of the School who might be interested in holding meetings or training days in our conference suite, parties or celebrations in our dining rooms, the Atrium or the Great Hall or sports fixtures at the main School site or at the Club.  If you are planning an event or seeking a location and would like to discuss availability and pricing of facilities and services, or would like to receive a copy of the launch brochure, please contact him on 020 8299 8017 or at
enterprises@alleyns.org.uk. Further details of ASEL's services will appear shortly on the School's website.
