18th January, 2012

January has brought with it great generosity from our community to warm the cockles of my heart on these chilly winter mornings. I'm delighted that, notwithstanding the chilly economic climate which mirrors the weather, since our launch on 1st December over 60 donors have responded to the Advancing Alleyn's appeal pledging cash or setting up standing orders in favour of the School. To date we have raised more than £30,000 for our bursary and facilities programme and, when taken together with the £70,000 donated by the Edward Alleyn Club, this represents real progress in our efforts to enhance the provision of bursaries so that the school community remains enriched through diversity, and so that the brightest and most talented young people share the opportunity to aim high and turn their aspirations into real achievements.
This week we will be sending out copies of the new Cornflower Club brochure to those AOBs and AOGs who have indicated that they intend leaving money to the School in their will. Several new legators have come forward over the Christmas period and I hope that their lead will be followed by other alumni and supporters over the coming months. With best wishes David Young |

Alleyn's Old Boy wins MC Captain James Higginson (Brading's, 1995-2000) is to receive the Military Cross for exceptional courage and leadership after he charged two Taliban positions while serving in Afghanistan. Capt James Higginson, of 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, showed 'extreme bravery' over a highly demanding tour, his citation says. The 27-year-old from Lewisham, said: 'It's a huge honour and truly humbling to receive this medal'. He added, 'it would not have been possible to do this without the professionalism of the paratroopers under my command, particularly at the section commander level, who are the true backbone of military operations.' Both the School and the Club pass on their heartfelt congratulations to Capt Higginson. |
