harbourside_400 Stretch your mind and help our bursary fund

Two years ago a slim volume appeared, designed to help people explore Christian faith without feeling pressured. A real publisher then took pity on this - in the author's charmingly self-effacing words - ‘ugly duckling and, with much re-writing and editing, has turned it into a slightly more attractive goose'. ‘At the Harbourside', written by our Chaplain Anthony Buckley, appeared to an unsuspecting world just before Easter. Anthony says that ‘Alleyn's was largely the inspiration for writing it' and has kindly arranged that proceeds from the sales of copies sold via the School to go to the School's bursary funds.

After studying history in Oxford Anthony taught for 11 years in a comprehensive school in Hereford, was then ordained and served as a vicar in Folkestone for 10 years. He joined Alleyn's in 2008. He is involved in the Diocese of Southwark, especially in the mentoring of curates, in the national School Chaplains' Association and in the international aid charity Mission Aviation Fellowship.

The book uses the image of choosing the right boat for the journey to examine some of the themes which people may wish to consider as they explore Christianity. There are sections on love, reasons for faith, suffering, self-esteem, forgiveness, prayer, church, behaviour and Jesus. It is deliberately short: designed to inform and whet the appetite for further thinking.

You can order the book, priced £4.99 (incl p+p at £1.50) online. If you wish for it be signed, for yourself or as an Alleyn's gift for someone, do feel free to ask: simply email chaplain@alleyns.org.uk
