  > About The Edward Alleyn Club   > Committee

David Hankin (1971-1978, Spurgeon's)

David, a past chairman and vice-chairman of the Club's Executive, is certainly no stranger to committee life, having endured 17 years on different club committees in various posts. He has also played for most of the EAC sports clubs in his time, although he claims he is “no sportsman”. That’s not for us to comment. However, we do have an unconfirmed report that he once took seven wickets for not very many against Dulwich CC on Sunday.

David studied classics at Durham University and has since spent much of his time working in credit risk. He is currently head of risk administration for a City-based venture capital house, so the future of the Club is probably in very safe hands.

David has a minor obsession with cricket. He is often to be found at test matches, says he wanted to be a county player when he was young, claims one of his greatest ambitions is to get an England call-up to play test cricket and is the source of the unconfirmed ‘seven wickets’ report! But he’s also a real family man. Married with two children, David says his biggest achievement is watching his children growing up and claims to be passionate about only a few things: his family, the EAC, good company, oh and beer!

We’re not sure about his taste in music though and are putting it down to too much Classics homework as a child. Amongst his desert island disks are ‘Rubber Ball’ and ‘When I’m cleaning windows’. Those Latin declensions have a lot to answer for…

Paul Barber (1972-1979, Spurgeon's)
Secretary

Paul  works for Waitrose as Head of Hospitality and has had jobs in  retail – with Sainsbury’s and Homebase - and in brand – with Disney - since leaving university. An active member of the club and keen sportsman, Paul loves the mix of ages that the EAC attracts, as well as the sense of personal history that his involvement with the club brings. Described as a ‘benevolent tyrant’ for his running of the last EAC Dinner, Paul tries to mix his love of food and atmosphere into this annual event and even tries to enjoy it himself!

As a husband, father of three young boys, footballer, tennis amateur, DIY fanatic and gardener, Paul is extremely busy. Despite his hectic schedule, Paul once found time to be players’ player of the season for his football team – as recently as the 90s anyway – and says his greatest ambition, which he will achieve through persistent practice, is to “finally crack a decent topspin backhand in tennis.”

John Battle (1974-1981, Tulley's)
Vice-Chair

As well as being Vice-Chair of the Club, he is the Captain of the AOBs' Strollers (over 35) team and has played football at the Club for over twenty years. He is keen to ensure the Club's grounds and clubhouse facilities are maintained at a high standard. Having played at various clubhouses across London over the years, he says the pitches and facilities at Burbage Road are among the best and people don't always appreciate how privileged we are.

He is a trained barrister and has worked over the years as a media lawyer for national news organisations - both newspapers and television -  advising journalists and editors on libel law, court reporting and privacy. He is Head of Compliance at ITN which produces ITV News and Channel 4 News.

John is dad to four children, two of whom attend Alleyn's.

Chris Heayberd (1964-1971, Dutton's)
Treasurer

Chris, who has held a myriad of positions within the EAC, is the current treasurer and president of the hockey club. A qualified Chartered Accountant who has spent much of his working life within commerce and industry, Chris now works as the finance director of a recruitment group quoted on AiM. He is also chairman of a company that manufactures bus shelters.

Chris's Alleyn's roots go back a long way. His grandfather, known to all as 'Inky' (Sidney Incledon) taught at Alleyn's for some 40 years and was also housemaster of Duttons. Both Chris and his younger brother were Duttons' house-captains and it seems the Heayberds maintain something of a tradition because Chris's daughter was also a recent house-captain.

Chris is usually quite a sportsman playing a lot of tennis poorly and the very occasional game of hockey.

Jason Peck (1982-1989, Roper's)

Jason has recently joined the Executive. He remains an active member of the football club having held various roles on the AOB FC committee. He is currently the chairman and treasurer of the football club and the captain of the 4th XI and has been playing for various sides for over 10 years.

He is a qualified Chartered Accountant who is currently working as a senior manager within Deloitte’s TMT group specialising in the telecoms, technology and media sectors. Jason has spent several years working in commerce and industry and also overseas with two and a half years working in Melbourne, Australia and a short stint in Paris.

Jason enjoys travel, good food and company as well as playing and watching various sports. He is a strong believer in the Club’s ability to remain a point of contact with old friends and a great way to make new ones as well as the opportunities it offers its members to continue to play and watch sport at the excellent club facilities.
